In a heartwarming display of community spirit, Hollingsworth Park volunteers from the board of Legacy Park Friends, along with dedicated City Park staff, came together to plant an evergreen boundary garden adjacent to the playground. This collaborative effort not only enhances the aesthetics of the park but also kindles a sense of belonging and environmental stewardship among residents.
The initiative began with the recognition of the need for a new garden bed where scraggly invasive species of shrubs had grown untamed for several years. The City of Greenville cleared the site while Earth Design landscape architects drew up a plan consisting of primarily native, drought resistant, and evergreen species. The bed separates the playground from a busy park corner, providing a tranquil vista for families.
On a cloudy raw day before Thanksgiving, a team assembled, armed with shovels and trowels, ready to contribute to the ongoing beautification efforts in the park. Each of the 96 plants were carefully placed in amended soil according to the plan. Several boulders will be added this winter.
The investment by Legacy Park Friends was more than just planting; it was an opportunity for several local residents and park staff to work side by side for the lasting betterment of the park. This project serves as a reminder of the importance of community involvement in maintaining and enhancing public spaces.
Take a moment to visit the new bed next to the spider climbing dome and imagine what it will look like as spring wakes up the plants and they thrive. What a welcoming atmosphere for park visitors as well as a testament of the success of our public private partnership.
